Enjoy the nature of the oldest biological revere in Cuba, the site where the world’s best tobacco grows and tobacco barons used to live, where you can swim at a car-free island with wonderful beaches and where you can cross the perhaps most beautiful landscapes of Cuba without any contamination.
Discovering with almost no contamination for 8 days the provinces Artemisa and Pinar del Rio by e-bike, spending 2 days at a car-free island, sky-blue water and incredible beaches, while enjoying the cuisine and silence, sounds almost like paradise – even a diving station is available! You can be sure that you take many highlights of this beautiful and unique trip with you, without taking the common touristic routes. Las Terrazas, Pinar del Rio, Vinales, Tobacco Street, Mogotes, La Palma, Cayo Levisa, Cabaña, the Orchard Garden, Baños San Juan, Bahia Honda, Bahia de Cabañas...
The start of our pure nature trip into the oldest reserve of biosphere in Cuba – Sierra del Rosario – is La Habana. You arrive at your accommodation one day before our e-bike-tour starts. During the journey you have max. 2 nights at the same accommodation, so please arrange your luggage accordingly. The transport of your luggage to the next place of stay is our business, looks just stupid, with your suitcase on the e-bike. Please take along just the most necessary things on our day trips. We accommodate our guests only in accommodations we have tested before. Please keep in mind that Cuba has its charm of luxury rather from a historical perspective and we therefore maybe have to accept compromises. Sometimes the accommodations are very simple but serve their purpose. Even if it sounds somewhat paradoxical, we believe that, this unconventional facts can be, among other things, the reason for an incomparable experience. Our goal is that you can always start our trips relaxed with the invitation to fully engage with your experiences with the e-bikes, Cuba and our team.
After the first night you meet our guide at 09:00 am in front of your hotel, Casa Particular or Casa de Cabaña in a Campismo resort. Hopefully you recognize him because of his bikes, his hat or his Cubykeshirt. After a short introduction to the bikes and adjustments to each individual height, you will receive some general information about the roads, our signs and
general rules of Cuban traffic. Now we are ready to begin our discovery-tour!
We start on day 1 with the tour from La Habana towards Las Terrazas. We discover the north coast of Artemisa, side by side with American old-timers, Camionetas, Bicitaxi, tractors and horse-drawn carriages. We pass the airport of Baracoa, make stops at unknown but beautiful bays, we cross the city of Mariel with its special development zone where the Cuban government tries to attract international conglomerates, which has already been successful and see, from the distance, the largest container port of the Caribbean. As a precaution we recharge our batteries during lunch, because depending on the wind conditions the energy consumption can be quite high. But don’t worry, we also have spare batteries with us. We continue our way to Cabaña and from there, via almost car-free roadways, towards San Juan to our final point Las Terrazas. The route becomes more demanding and hillier. At the same time the landscape becomes more and more extraordinary. In the evening we reach our accommodation, being surrounded by rivers, waterfalls, lakes and small mountains, as well as an impressive flora and fauna. After having a combined dinner, we recharge our batteries and take care of our slightly damaged backsides.
On our second day we start again at 9:00 am. Today our nostalgia leads us towards Soroa, while crossing the nature park of Las Terrazas and increasing our altitude. Even being supported by an electric motor it is possible that we need to dismount our e-bikes. Anyway the view, the Mojito and the mountain bath will compensate these efforts. In the nature park live more than 70 different bird species and grow 850 different plant species. Furthermore 11% of the plants and 50% of the animals can be only found in this region.
At midday we continue towards the Autopista and maybe you will be cycling some kilometres, on a freeway, for the first time in your life, before leaving it, at the latest in San Cristobal, to breathe again the life of people at the countryside. From Santa Cruz de los Pinos, we head towards San Diego de los Baños, a once forgotten, but since a view years rediscovered spa resort, with many heling springs. Our accommodation will be located near by the cave “Cueva de los Portales”, where Che Guevara supposedly had for 30 days his secret command centre, during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Evening program is moving to our accommodations, having dinner and recharging our batteries.
The third day is dedicated to the tobacco. We combat towards Pinar del Rio and Viñales, passing intoxicating roads and the street of tobacco. Mogotes with its giant hills, poking out of the earth and tobacco plantations will accompany us on this route. Of course we visit a tobacco farm and get explained why the best tobacco leaves in the world come from this region and how they turn them into a Cohiba Behike, Montechrito or other cigars. Hector Luis, “el hombre Habano”, will do the job if possible. On his tobacco farm, among a beautiful landscape, we have lunch. The oldest tribe of indigenes in Cuba lived in this region too and already used to smoke these aromatic leaves. Pinar del Rio became one of the richest cities in Cuba due to the tobacco trade with Europe.
There is much to see on our crusades through the provincial capital. On our way to Viñales we find our next accommodation – Villa Aguas Claras – where we can use the pool to think back to the so far made impressions. We already know the evening ritual by now.
The fourth day we cross Viñales and take our time to enjoy more intensively the probably most beautiful landscape in Cuba. We continue taking the road to La Palma toward the north, crossing an extremely impressive area, where the pillars of a former caves landscape that collapsed thousands of years ago, nowadays form bizarre hills. Now we are approaching toward the north coast and our bathing island – Cayo Levisa – is not far anymore. In the evening we reach our rustic Casa Particularwo where Gustavo and his family expect us and cook for us. The next morning we will pedal from there to the jetty, to cross to the island.
The fifth day starts for us at 09:30 am with an ultra-short bike ride of 10 minutes to the jetty toward Cayo Levisa. We cross over with our bikes and spend 2 days with sunbathing, diving, hiking, hanging around, just whatever you long for, as long as the little paradise can fulfil your wishes. Fantastic beaches, crystal clear water, extremely good mojitos and delicious food are guaranteed. We spend the night in the Hotel Cayo Levisa and pass the time backside-friendly to already prepare for our return ride.
The sixth day takes the slogan: ¡Hanging a la playa! Just do whatever you want on this beach day. Just think about charging your batteries.
The seventh day means saying goodbye to our island paradise. At 01:00 pm we take the boat to steer back to the mainland and start pedalling again. We move on, with our electric companions, towards the Bay of Cabañas along the beautiful north coast of the provinces Pinar del Rio an Artemisa. The routes, the villages, the countryside, the people, the country life, the bays, all this will captivate you. Cuba muy Cuba “muy authentico ist garantiert.authentico” is guaranteed. These regions are completely unknown by tourists, accordingly we and our e-bikes will be admired and welcomed, sometimes as if we were some kind of Aliens or liberators of whatever. We move on to our next accommodation, being impressed by the simplicity of life circumstances. After our dinner and the usual evening ritual, there may still be some time to share our pictures, videos and gained impressions.
The eighth day takes the motto – Back to La Habana. At 09:00 am we saddle the chickens and follow the magnetism of the metropolis La Habana. We cycle through the interior of the county towards the capital. This last day will not be less eventful as the others! We pedal through seemingly forgotten pueblos, see former “Centrales”, which are still preserved relics from the heyday of sugar cane production, being nowadays ruins of another time. We reach the suburbs of La Habana and unfortunately the time has come to say goodbye, at least from your e-bike. Once your reach your accommodation you will not need to recharge your battery as the donkey comes into the shed and gets prepared for the next trip through the primal Cuba. Our eight days trip “through the west with the e-bike” comes to its end.
After the last night at your Hotel / Casa, your trip will hopefully continue in the unique and exciting Cuba or you will happily embark on your return journey, knowing that you have mastered this unique trip. We are happy to take care of any transfers to the airport, to the bus station or an old-timer trip into the country.
With pleasure we can organise extensions for swimming, diving, hanging, snorkelling or whatever you are up to.
A remark concerning the flexibility. We know that our e-bike tours do not offer much space for individual destinations, the days are really busy, but you always have the opportunity to coordinate your wishes with us. Whether you want to enjoy the beach for longer, visit a theatre or a museum, continue the tour for any reason with another vehicle or whatever you have on your mind, we will always show you as much flexibility as possible and try everything, to adapt your stay also according to your wishes. We certainly will not always succeed, but mostly.
