Day 1: E-Bike in Havana (ca. 50 KM)
At 9 am in the morning, after your first night in Havana, our guide expects you at your accommodation. After a short introduction to the e-bikes, client’s bike adjustments to each individual hight and some general information about the roads and rules of Cuban traffic, we are ready to begin our discovery-trip with the e-bikes. As you will quickly notice, the means of transportation in Cuba are different from what we are used to.
We start our tour towards the animated and historic Habana Vieja. We pass the Callejón de Hamel, the center of the Afro Cuban Santeria scene in Centro Habana. We continue our tour and make stops at the Capitol, the Central Park and the Grand Theater to get into the historic center of Havana and its unique atmosphere. We stop at the “Perfume House” and the Fortress “Castillo de la Real Fuerza”. In the more historical places of the city, we frequently must walk next to our e-bikes, as we are not allowed to ride in narrow streets with many tourists. The most important places are: Plaza Vieja, Plaza San Francisco de Asís, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza de Armas. Afterwards we will cycle coolheaded the Paseo del Prado. Lunch will be at some restaurant in Habana Vieja or Centro Habana. Of course, we must not miss the Malecón during our trips through Havana. Beginning with the “Hotel Nacional”, we will pass the elegant residential area of Vedado with its plenty of architectural diversity. We will be cycling on the street Calle 23, not far from La Rampa and finally reach, via the Avenida Paseo, the historic revolution square. Here we can feel with a certain sensitivity the atmosphere that must have been obtained when Fidel gave his eloquent speeches to more than a million of Cubans. On the way back to our starting point, we make a final stop in an appropriate place, to have a drink and to review the impressions of the day.
Day 2: From Havana to Viñales (ca. 260 km) by BMW-Enduro
We meet in the morning in the Western district Miramar to take over the motorcycles and then head westwards. Using smaller streets that are light in traffic we will arrive in Las Terrazas, an ecological rural community and recreational site, where we enjoy a bath in the river San Juan. We can also have lunch here (optional). We continue on through the Sierra del Rosario towards the Valley of Viñales, crossing one of the few areas in Cuba that still have natural vegetation. Road conditions get worse here, but riding an Enduro this is where the fun is. After a short stop in San Diego de los Baños we enter the national park La Güira and reach the Cueva de los Portales, a large cave that functioned as commando post for Ché Guevara during the Cold War Crisis and that now houses a small museum. From there it takes us another hour over bad roads, but through beautiful landscapes before we finally reach the Valley of Viñales. We stop at the lookout point Los Jazmines before entering the village and checking in to our casa particular.
Day 3: Through tobacco fields (ca. 340 km) by BMW-Enduro
After breakfast we leave Viñales, heading westwards. We make a stop at the Cemetary of the Militiaman in La Moncada. Continuing our motorbike trip, we pass the Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás, which is one of the biggest cave systems in Cuba and Latin America. After passing through the small town Sumidero one of the most beautiful stages in Cuba awaits us.
The street from Sumidero to Isabel Rubio meanders alongside a picturesque valley with basically no traffic. From Isabel Rubio we hit the Carretera Central, passing through wide fields of tobacco until we reach San Juan y Martínez, where we can enjoy lunch (optional). After lunch we continue heading eastwards until we arrive back in Miramar and return the motorbikes. A transfer will bring us to our accommodation in Havana.
